Do you have Heartburn or GERD symptoms despite taking daily medications?

The purpose of the study is to determine how well an investigational medication works when given with a standard dose of a Proton Pump Inhibitor for patients with GERD who continue to have persistent symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation. The active ingredient in the study drug is Welchol or Colesevelam (used to lower cholesterol and treat type 2 diabetes). If you qualify to be in this study, you may continue to take your proton pump inhibitor.

The study is double-blinded which means that neither you nor the study staff knows what treatment you would be receiving but in the case of an emergency that information would become available. If you are interested and volunteer to be in this study, you would come to the study center for up to 5 visits over the course of 17 weeks. There is a chance of you receiving a placebo instead of the study drug, which will neither benefit nor harm you.

Visits may include physical exams, blood pressure, labs, and questionnaires. You will also complete an electronic diary at home to record your ongoing symptoms. Study required medical procedures and medication are provided at no cost to you. You will be compensated for your time and travel.

Qualified volunteers will receive at no cost:

  • Study medication
  • Study-related care from a local doctor
  • Reimbursement for your time and travel upto $1,005.00

If you are interested you should:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be taking daily medications for your heartburn
